New macadamia cultivars released

Posted on

Macadamias are the first – and so far only – Australian native food crop to see significant commercial development, and the home-grown nut’s flavour and nutrition attributes have generated a surge in popularity in recent decades.

Four new cultivars have been released by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Horticulture Innovation Australia that could significantly improve the industry’s productivity. The new varieties are part of a long-running breeding effort which is now run by QAAFI and have shown potential to increase yields by up to 30 per cent.
