Sorghum market boosted by China’s top-selling spirit

Posted on

The popularity of the Chinese baijiu drink, the world’s biggest selling alcoholic spirit, is presenting new opportunities for Australian sorghum growers.

China did not import sorghum until 2013 but by 2016 was importing up to 10 million tonnes annually, which is used for animal feed and baijiu production. Now QAAFI and DAF researchers have joined forces with AEGIC and Charles Sturt University to increase the value of Australian sorghum through research to improve the quality attributes for the manufacture of baijiu.
